About Us

History

The area which surrounds Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Starview, Pennsylvania in the southern part of East Manchester Township, York County, was settled by English and German immigrants in the latter part of the 18th century. The church is located on the corner of North Sherman Street Extended Route 24 and Codorus Furnace Road. Its roots date back more than 200 years. We do know that the present building was built in 1875 at a cost of $2,200. The earliest Synodical records reveal that a Lutheran congregation was organized sometime in the year 1819. Due to the generosity of two brothers Philip and Andreas Hoover, the church was known as Hoover’s church and began as a Union church serving both Lutheran and Reformed congregations. For a more in-depth Historical Sketch of our church a booklet created for its 200th anniversary is available thanks to Sister Megan McClinton.

Who We Are

During 2020 and 2021, most worship services were conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Worship Services were livestreamed using Zoom, or available on YouTube. Meetings were hybrid in nature, with some folks meeting in person and others using Zoom. Social distancing, wearing masks and temperatures taken were strictly followed. In 2022 and 2023, we began meeting in person and started offering live services at 9:00 AM. Communion is held the first Sunday of each month.
